Happy 3rd Birthday Chicago Kidical Mass!

This past Saturday, we celebrated the 3rd year of Kidical Mass rides in Chicago with a blustery Palmer Square ride – the original neighborhood to host Kidical Mass rides in Chicago.  We gained two more Chicago neighborhood rides this past summer – Hyde Park and Lincoln Square! Now you’ve got three choices on different weekends, to ride with families and kids on fun short rides in Chicago.

Getting everyone rallied together to head out.

It was cold (low 30s)  and windy, and we had light flurries for most of the ride.  Little Ding and I rode up to the ride from our house and I wondered if I had gone a little overboard when I threw on his snowboarding pants for the ride .  When we hit that wind coming out of the north though on the ride up (a ride almost entirely headed north), I didn’t feel so bad – he pedaled along on his bike and stayed nice and warm while under-dressed me got cold.

We're out of the part and getting ready to make our first turn.

Riding through the Logan Square neighborhood. Yes, that’s the light snow you see.

Mr. Ding joined us at the playground at end of the ride, on the orange Yuba Mundo w/o the hooptie.   Turned out to be a handy thing, as one of the adult riders – Rico – got a flat.  We offered to give him a ride home on the Yuba.  So, we dropped the front wheel of his bike into the wheel slot that is cut into the running board on our Yuba Mundo (we use it to haul the little guy’s bike around), and told Rico to climb on behind Andrew.  Off we rode with Ash and the baby in the bakfiets in front of us,  and their daughter and Little Ding riding between and alongside of us.  Our own mini-Kidical Mass back to their house.

We're always happy to give someone a ride on our Yuba Mundo.

Last year’s ride was sunny and a little warmer, but it’s still great to be able to meet up for rides with other families who like to get out and see the city by bike.  Happy 3rd Birthday Chicago Kidical Mass! May there be many more!

We definitely appreciated the lift. It would have been an even longer ride if we’d had to walk it.

Sure thing! There’s always extra room with the Yuba! 😉
