Dutch Bike Company Chicago is No More

Dutch Bike Company - Wicker Park

It’s been a sad week here in Chicago if you’re a fan of Dutch-style bikes as the Dutch Bike Company store here in Chicago has closed it doors. Mr. Ding noticed that things looked kinda quiet at the store Friday morning when he went past the store, and then the folks over at Chicargobike broke the story that afternoon on their blog.

While this means that you will no longer be able to purchase WorkCycles brand bikes from a local store here in Chicago, they are still available in the United States and there are still plenty of other local bike shops selling Dutch and Dutch-style bikes.  The popularity of upright city bikes had definitely caught on here in Chicago – I can say this because I see more and more Dutch-style bikes around the city every day as I ride.

Chicago bike shops that sell Dutch and Dutch-style or “City”  bikes:

U.S. Bike Shops that sell WorkCycles Bikes:

If you own a Workcycles bike , you should be able to find a local bike mechanic to work on your internal hub and take care of your steel-framed Dutch beast.  Most of the local bike shops listed here have some experience with internal hubs – just ask them.

Heritage though will be doing what Dutch Bikes was supposed to; offer a coffee shop in house to add through traffic.

So sorry to read this news.  By coincidence, today I happen to be wearing my Dutch Bike Co. t-shirt (which I haven’t worn in a while) purchased when I last visited Chicago in Summer, 2010.

How do you know that Heritage will sell WorkCycles?

I want to talk to Vince, but it turns out I don’t have his email or phone number, just his Twitter.

I don’t know that and actually I am pretty sure they will not be importing Workcycles bikes. Thanks for pointing that error out – that’s what I get for writing a post at midnight on a Sunday night after a busy weekend. I’ve corrected the post to group Heritage Bicycles with the other shops that carry Dutch and “City” bikes.
