About a year or so ago I stared a somewhat weekly feature called the Bike Parking Hall of Shame. Every Friday or so, I wold post a picture and location of a bike parking location in Chicago that didn’t actually provide much of a parking opportunity for cyclists. Whether it was the complete lack of parking where it’s required by the Chicago Municipal Code, or bike parking that is not secure or usable, it could be a candidate for the Hall of Shame. Since that time I’ve also written about good bike parking too, and bike parking efforts in other cities, so it seems apropos to rename this part of my site to Bike Parking Fridays. I continue to post about bike parking, good, bad or otherwise, on Fridays. As always, if you know of a location in Chicago that has particularly good or bad bike parking, drop me a note at samantha at dingdingletsride dot com.
If you are a local business, there is no reason for you not to have sufficient bike parking for your patrons. The Chicago Municipal code requires that almost all businesses have secure parking for at least two bikes. In addition, The Chicago Department of Transportation’s Bicycle Program installs and maintains bike racks in Chicago and provides free consulting services to building owners, as part of the Bike 2015 Plan.
