Cargo Bike Week 2014: Cargo Bike Shops in Chicago Pt. 1

Monday and Tuesday I wrote about all the different kinds of cargo bikes out there, including the types you can expect to see at this weekend’s Cargo Bike Roll Call .  Now, I bet you’re asking about where the heck one can buy these kind of bikes in Chicago.  And I’ve got the answers for you here in a 2-part post about Chicago bike shops that sell cargo bikes.

First up is J.C. Lind Bike Co.,  located on Wells Street in the Old Town neighborhood of Chicago.   This is the place for European cargo bikes here in Chicago.  They stock a variety of brands fromWorkCycles to Christiania, to Winther.

Dottie over at Let’s Go Ride a bike did a nice review of this bike a couple of years ago – read her review here.

Along withe box and utility bikes, J.C Lind sells the Yuba Mundo cargo bike, which is also stocked by a friendly bike shop south on Halsted street in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago, called Blue City Cycles.    These bikes are great bikes for hauling kids or cargo!

Here’s our Yuba Mundo with a Go-Getter pannier on one side, and towing a bike on the other. Yuba sells the running board pre-cut to hold a bike tire and it has an adjuster piece that allows you to tow a kids bike or an adult bike as in this photo. Very handy.

If you’re looking for a smaller version of the Yuba Mundo, or an e-assist cargo bike, then Wander Bikes near the Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago is the place to go. They sell the El Boda Boda -an e-assist version of the Boda Boda cargo bike from Yuba bikes, as well as the elMundo (the e-assist version of the Yuba Mundo) and a few other e-assist bikes, some of which they rent as well.

My test-ride of one of their JuiceRiders ODK electric bikes. Step-through style , low 20-inch wheels for stability under loads, upright styling, and works with Yepp child seats. A little small for me though.

If you’re interested in where to find an XtraCycle, Big Dummy, Bullitts, or some SOMA cargo bikes,  check back tomorrow  for Part 2 of Cargo Bike Shops in Chicago!
