Bike Winter – Go Forth and Conquer That Ice!

Blue door and Omafiets

In yesterday’s post I was trying to decide if I was going to ride to work as the streets near my house still appeared fairly ice-covered in the early morning hours. Since I wasn’t going to be heading out until later in the morning, post rush-hour,  I decided to ride.   Afterall, I do have studded tires on Oma – just the thing for the ice.

The major streets and most of the side streets were fairly clear by the time I headed out. A couple of side streets were still covered with a frozen snowy-slush mess, but I rode right through it with my studded tires and didn’t have any problems.  I crossed the river at the Cortland Bridge, and the bridge plating looked clear, so I rode across as well with no problem. All in all not a bad morning ride to the office.

When I got to the office,  I noticed that I was not the only one who had chosen to ride to work that day as a couple of other cyclists had already locked their bikes up nearby.Note the ice that still remains on the sidewalk.

And as I was locking up Oma, another cyclist rode down the street. It was a great day for cycling in Chicago!

Chicago cyclist

Today is Winter Bike to Work day here in Chicago so by the time you read this I’ll be heading downtown to say Hi to all the winter cyclists and the folks from the Active Transportation Alliance before I head to the office.  Get out and ride!
