Bike Parking Hall of Shame: The Walgreens and CVS Stores at Halsted & Clark

Bike Parking Hall of Shame - Walgreens at Halsted & Clark

Sorry to pick on you again Walgreens , but it seems like you must have makd a bulk purchase of these crappy bike racks at some point because I even saw on outside an Oak Park store earlier this week (sorry,  no pictures).  As stated before, these types of ‘grill’ racks are not large enough for an adult-sized bike to rest in one of the slots and securely lock a bike frame and front wheel to the rack. Instead cyclists lock their bikes on the ends like I did with Oma here, or prop their bikes over the top bar as the other cyclist did in this picture. Since this rack is pushed up against the wall, there is also only one open side to this particular rack.

Because this particular Walgreens sits a bit back from the street, behind it’s parking lot, city-installed racks on the sidewalk would not be of use – too far away from the entrance.  But in the same space that holds this rack and another one on the other side of the propane tank rack,  a couple of U-racks would work wonders.

Of course, the Walgreens store at least made an attempt. The CVS across the street has no bike parking at all.  It’s a crowded spot to be sure, but there’s space for a U-rack or two.  I’m not even sure what those railings are for – the carts are kept inside the store .

If any folks from Walgreens or CVS are reading this post by the way, check out my “Bike Parking Hall of Shame”  landing page – it’s got links to all sorts of resources for Chicago businesses with questions about bike parking, as well as the best practices is bike parking for businesses.

With the forecast for a snowstorm this weekend, it will be interesting to see how many businesses plow their snow up against their bike racks  – just more fodder for the Hall of Shame.  Send me your pictures and locations and I’ll be sure to post them!
