An Australian Dutch Bike!?

Papillionaire Sommer

Papillionaire Sommer

Thanks to LodolLanes – a  city bike blogger out of Denver for tipping me off to a Australian bike company that assembles and sells Dutch-style bikes in Melbourne! Who knew?   Here’s how they describe it:

Papillionaire Bicycles combine timeless aesthetics with modern usability. Sourcing quality parts locally and abroad, each bicycle is assembled in Melbourne with meticulous care by dedicated bicycle mechanics. Every Papillionaire bicycle features:

  • Powder coated lugged steel frames
  • 3-speed Nexus Shimano internal hubs
  • Schwalbe Delta Cruiser tyres
  • Caliper front and Shimano roller rear brakes
  • Leather saddle, grips and other accessories.

Is this a pretty bike or what?

Now, it is missing a few things that I would want on a Dutch bike for myself like, hub dynamo lights, a sturdy rear rack, a skirt guard, and fully-enclosed chaincase, and a heavy-duty front rack and basket ( not sure how much weight that front basket can hold). But it’s still has pretty lines.  Looks like it is only available as a 3-speed (Nexus Shimano Hub). Also looks like it only comes in one frame size – 46cm ? That would make it far to small for a tall Dutch-American woman like myself to ride.  You should check out their website for additional specs on the Sommer as well as their Classic bike which is more like a mixte.  The bikes sport Schwalbe Delta cruiser tires, and leather or leather-looking sprung saddles that resemble Brooks saddles but are not.  Probably means they keep the price down.  If I wanted one in black, with their ‘crafted leather saddle’,  leather grips, and the wicker basket they show in the pictures, along with a chrome rear rack, it’s going to set me back about about $648 Australian dollars which comes out to about $583 US.

I don’t know how hard bikes from WorkCycles, Velorbis, Batavus, or Gazelle are to come by in Australia, not to mention Electras or some of the other less-expensive Dutch-style bikes, so this may well be a great option for those folks  down under.   If you’ve got one,  or take one for a test ride, ya gotta let me know.
