A Saturday Afternoon Bike Ride to Wicker Park

We made it back to Chicago after our travels up north, just in time for some hot sunny summer weather. Perfect weather for a bike ride, so off we went on Saturday, headed for Wicker Park  – the park –  within the neighborhood.  First we had to check the air in our tires – turns out Little Ding’s bike needed some air.

Then we were truly off and headed out to the park. You’ll note that the guys were riding on the sidewalk. Right now we are keeping Little Ding on the sidewalk as he gains confidence in his riding skills and learns the ins and out of city riding.  I usually ride in the street alongside them, and help Little Ding navigate street crossings when need be.

We rode by the clock tower entrance to the Kling Brothers building – now condos, and passed by some more cyclists out for a spin too.

We made a side trip to Rapid Transit Bike Shop for a quick adjustment on Little Ding’s bike. They’re a great little bike shop in Wicker Park – I’ve been going there for years. They’re located on North Avenue – just look for the bike hanging above the street. And they have a free air pump outside their shop for cyclists to use any time.

Finally, we arrived at the park. One of the best things about Wicker Park is the fountain. The original basin remains from the first fountain that was built in 1892, and a replica of the original cast-iron fountain in the center was added a few years ago. The flowers are always lovely in Wicker Park –thanks to a garden club I do believe — and there are always people sitting around the fountain relaxing or reading. It’ s our favorite place to have a snack or water break. Mr Ding graciously went across the street to a mini-mart and brought us back some water and blue Gatorade by request (that’ s Mr. Ding’s bike the way).

Then it was back to the playground for more of every kid’s favorite activity.. walking up the slide. Admit it – you’ve walked up a slide or two in your time.
